A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
