Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
